　　斯通家族从英国搬到美国来已有若干年，但是斯通夫妇还保留着英国人保守严谨的风气，一大家子儿女也在父母的影响下变得有点怪里怪气。圣诞节到了，大儿子埃弗特（德莫特o麦隆尼 饰）要带回自己的未婚妻梅瑞迪丝（萨拉o杰西卡o帕克 饰）过来共度圣诞，全家如临大敌。这位可怜的美国姑娘第一天来到就被这家人的阵仗吓了一跳，自己无论从言语都服饰都与这个家庭格格不入，眼看连自己的爱情都保卫不下去了，急中生智的她邀请妹妹朱莉（克莱尔o丹尼斯 饰）来给自己精神支持。然而意想不到的是，每个人很快就都喜欢上了友好、随意的朱莉。事情似乎朝另一个方向飞速发展。
