　　二战中第442步兵团是1943年2月1日由罗斯福总统亲自宣布组建的另一支美籍日裔组成的部队，辖3个步兵营，第522野炮营，第232工兵连，反坦克炮连、加农炮连、特务连、勤务连各一。有所不同的是，这支部队是全志愿部队。绝大部分志愿者直接来自美国本土日裔拘留营地。第100步兵营作为第1营（原编制第1营留在国内继续担任训练任务）被编入第442团级战斗队。
　　第100营/第442团是二战期间受勋最多的美军部队：该部累计有1.8万人因功受表彰，9486人次因战伤获紫星勋章（第100营因此被称为“紫星营”），559人次获得银星勋章，4000人次获铜星勋章，7次获总统部队嘉奖。2000年6月，克林顿政府还追授该部20人荣誉勋章（共33枚）。因其特殊功绩，第442步兵团第100步兵营至今仍是陆军保留的唯一常备预备役步兵单位。
　　在二战结束后，第422步兵团成为第五军最出色的部队之一，被选派到了华盛顿特区参加了1946独立日的阅兵仪式。当日的美国总统杜鲁门很有感触地对些士兵说到“你们不仅仅要和残酷的敌人作战，还要面对友军的歧视，然而你们战胜了这一切。”1996年克林顿总统向还健在的位当日第422步兵团及第100独立步兵营的6位老兵颁发了荣誉勋章（the Medal of Honor）。
