经历过经济危机的苦恼后，卡尔文(冰块?酷巴 饰)的理发店没有卖出去继续营业了，阴翳过后这里又恢复了往日的欢声和热闹。这间理发店是卡尔文的家族产业，位于南部芝加哥，虽然收入寥寥一直靠着几个老主顾维持，憨厚热心的卡尔文仍然继续营业，在他看来，这里至少能够带给社区的人们休息和交流的场所。
理发店似乎还是老样子，人们聚集在这里讨论着家长里短或者国家大事，人人畅所欲言争论不休，却又热闹非常充满生气。理发师老艾迪(锡德里克 饰)还是为顾客们剃着一成不变的发型，以前颇为清高的吉米(辛?派屈克?托马斯 饰)终于变得随和亲切了，而泰莉(伊娃 饰)在对男友的失望之下，选择了一直暗恋她的邓卡(莱昂纳多?艾?豪斯 饰)，理发店似乎更加团结亲密了。
正当卡尔文奢望着理发店安安稳稳的营业下去时，旁边忽然开了间美容院，新潮的设计、先进的设备、优秀的理发师以及周到的服务，尤其是开朗热情的理发师吉娜(奎因?莱提法 饰)十分受人欢迎。很快，美容院立刻引起了社区人们的注意，吸引了社区大部分的顾客，甚至连理发店的老顾客们也开始动摇，打算把脚挪到旁边的美容院去了。
在美容院的竞争之下，刚刚缓过危机的卡尔文眼看着又要面临关门的危险，他们气恼地和美容院发生了一系列的争执，几乎闹得不可开交。
此事未了，一波又起，有个大财团试图吞并芝加哥南部地区所有的服务业，他们开了咖啡店、录像出租店和连锁理发店，并且试图把所有家庭式经营的小店全部赶尽杀绝。为了共同的利益，卡尔文的理发店和吉娜的美容院很快停止争执，合力一起争取他们的利益了……
