　　二次大战前夕，英国军官桑迪克（Walter Pidgeon 饰）潜伏希特勒的山中庄园行刺未果被捕，由于拒不承认自己受英国政府指使，桑迪克受尽折磨后被德军推下山崖。大难不死的桑迪克乘船回到英国，同时德国方面派出假扮桑迪克的军官与众眼线在全城追索他，德国政府亦向英国施压。
　　
　　桑迪克在险象环生的亡命途中结识开朗直接的姑娘杰瑞（Joan Bennett 饰），后者被他吸引，并竭尽所能为他提供了帮助。桑迪克与杰瑞度过了一段短暂的纯真时光，然而危机四伏的情势下他并不能给予对方更多的幸福。德国人很快找到了桑迪克的藏身之处，并掳走了杰瑞，这让桑迪克面临的形势恶劣到了极点。
