◎简 介
1927年6月，密西西比河的支流老人河流域发生了严重的洪涝灾害。由于救援人员的紧缺，帕赤曼监狱里的犯人也被组织起来参加救援行动。为了营救一个被洪水围困的妇女和在棉花棚上等待救援的男人，监狱长把J.J和约翰派了出去。
接受营救任务时，约翰第一个想到的就是如何趁机逃跑。但当约翰提出要一起逃走的想法时，J.J却拒绝了。一个大浪打来，约翰落水后去向不明，而J.J钻出水面后不久就找到一名叫艾德的孕妇。虽然艾德极力要求J.J将自己赶紧送往红十字会组织设在卡若通的帐篷营，但J.J却坚持要找到另一名男子后再一起回去。无奈之下，艾德也只好跟着J.J在老人河的洪流中继续寻找着另一名男子。第二天，在J.J迷失方向的时候，艾德临产了。面对四下无人的滔滔洪水，J.J只好硬着头皮为艾德接下一个婴儿。
三天的时间过去了。见约翰和J.J还没有回来，有人建议监狱长向上级报告，说J.J在救援行动中被洪水冲走。而此时三天的患难生活让艾德对J.J已经产生了感情。经过几天的搏斗，J.J终于把艾德母子两人带出了汪洋的洪水。当远远地看见帕赤曼出现在眼前时，J.J又换上了自己的那身囚服，庄重地等待着典监狱长的命令。几个月后，艾德在带着孩子来监狱看望J.J时，艾德告诉J.J，她和孩子在等着他回来。
