　　维斯康提后期喜欢以贵族家庭内部的矛盾纠葛为主要题材，毕竟他自己也出生贵族家庭。本片属于这类题材，但却是他最不为人熟知的一部。他的老搭档兰开斯特扮演一个住在罗马豪华公寓里的收藏绘画的美国退休老教授，电影通过他的角度审视了一个贵族家庭内部的种种状况。该家庭搬进了艺术家的楼上，家族里充满了堕落、仇恨、妒忌等不为人知的内幕，老教授与他们产生了不可调和的矛盾，也使自己陷入疯狂和混乱之中。
